I took this photo at the Festival of AB, a fund raiser for recently departed, and much loved surfer/shaper Allan Byrne. I was trying to get a shot of Ted Grambeau’s amazing aerial image of the paddle out – the largest I have been a part of. As I was taking the photo the guy on the right stepped into frame and we got talking. His name is Ian Byrne, and he is Al’s younger brother. He told me about dropping AB at the airport when he left for Bali, hell-bent on taking his place in the masters event at Padang. “I’ll make ya’ proud,” was the last thing AB said to his little bro. Ian told me how he would be continuing to make the deep six channel bottoms his brother was famous for. “I’m going to make him proud,” Ian told me.
