SURFER STYLE

From he-men to she-men and everything in between

Have been struck lately by just what a disparate bunch we surfers have become. I was sitting out in the water the other day and looked around and the six or more surfers closest to me were all sporting full-on tattoos and shaved heads, like it was some biker meeting or neo-nazi rally. Each to their own, but I kinda wonder why so many surfers these days feel the need to try and looking so menacing. The next evening, I found myself at a surf art/music night at the Curve surf shop in Currumbin and spotted about half a dozen Alex Knosts - you know, the nuevo/retro Californian longboard hipster - all cute little fringes and skinny jeans and old cardigans and effeminate mannerisms. If you had locked these two different groups in a room there would have been bloodshed. Not sure what the point of all that is, except it seems to me a hell of a lot of surfers are affecting a look and manner based on some kind of template - whether that template is Romper Stomper or the latest Thomas Campbell movie - which renders them cartoonishly derivative. Me, I'm a married, middle-aged, receding, untidy slob in no-name tracky pants and stained t-shirts and I just know it is only a matter of time 'til that look comes back into fashion.
