THE RECESSION WE HAD TO HAVE

The silver lining to the GFC

Bumped into a fella I know named Spike, old mate of Occy's from Cronulla now residing in Tugun, who makes a brief cameo in the Occy book, and is still ripping. Saw him in Tugun post office and, inevitably whenever two surfers meet on this stretch of coast lately, we commented on the silly run of waves we've been having. "I got retrenched three weeks ago," Spike beamed, as if he was telling me he'd won lotto. "I feel like ringing the boss and thanking him. Fittest I've been in 20 years." Spike reckons he surfed 20 days out of the 21 day swell and whatever his future employment prospects may be, right now he has the golden glow of a man who has enjoyed a window of sheer bliss. Well done fella. Another man who has timed his run with characteristic and consummate skill is outgoing ASP President Rabbit Bartholomew, who has been enjoying semi-retirement after resigning as the pro tour's grand poobah, while the waves are firing. Rab always planned March, April as his transition period between his old and new gigs and he couldn't have timed it better. Gotta love it.
