I THINK I KNOW WHERE KIRRA WENT

It's drifted north a few k's, though I can't say where.

April 6, 2009: With all the recent gnashing of teeth about the fate of Kirra, and its recent efforts at resurrection, it was more than a little startling to see a certain other pointbreak doing a reasonable impersonation of it today. I won't name the place - it is no secret spot and many of you will guess anyway but I don't really want to imbed its name in any more minds. Who knows how long the bank will stay around, but for today at least it was something extraordinary - a four to six feet, ruler edged east swell, zippering barrels for hundreds of metres and at some points in the morning only a dozen or so surfers in the water. Astounding. This all comes on the tail end of one of the most extraordinary runs of swell ever witnessed on the Gold Coast, almost three weeks of six foot plus point surf. It has gotten to the stage where many surfers are openly hoping it drops so we can carry on with other aspects of our lives, but there looks like every chance it may well resume, after a brief lull. You won't see too many photos of the last couple of remarkable days at this spot because much of the time it was grey and raining but those who were there will be talking about it for a while. At times, paddling back out it resembled an Indonesian reef - straight, hollow, mechanical and jade green, like Nias. And for the most part, a pleasantly stoked vibe with barely a drop in or a harsh word. Nice one. One thing I would ask of my fellow surfers, though, is - a little more communication please. How many waves get wasted by surfers frantically paddling for waves they have little chance of catching or making. If you aren't going to make a wave, please call in one of the people waiting down the line. Waves like this are a precious resource and not to be squandered. Thank you.
