THE SUPERBANK IS DEAD

Long live the Superbank

Anyone else a little sick of the continued hype surrounding Coolangatta's long since deceased Superbank? The web cams continue to shriek about the "perfect lines at the Superbank" and "all-time Superbank" even when the bank is clearly broken up, sectioning and full of holes and not even a shadow of its former self. Snapper is now a fat, slow, rolling mal wave a lot of the time and can no longer handle a swell over four feet because the entire Coolangatta Bay is a good two to three metres shallower than it once was. Larger swells cap and wash through, then fill up into worthless burgers. Little moments of joy might arise somewhere along the Greenmount to Kirra stretch from time to time, but it is a random and haphazard affair. TBFKAK (the break formerly known as Kirra) throws up the odd makable barrel on big swells but is not a patch on its former self, so we now have the worst of both worlds. Even so, the media hysteria over the Bank is so persistent and persuasive you can still spot international visitors checking the surf from the top of Greenmount headland and sprinting to the surf in a lather, as if they are seeing a mirage. The real magic of this exquisitely contoured stretch of coast will continue to arise somewhere and it's the astute, long-time local surfers who inevitably adapt best to its changing faces and find the below sea level dredgers where ever they arise. But it is certainly not a phenomenon worth traveling halfway across the world for. Please cross it off your list of surf holiday destinations and choose a more reliable wave that has been less desecrated by the folly of man.
