I have spent the best part of the last year collaborating with the great Mark Occhilupo on his biography and it finally comes out next month, through Random House. Anyone who even vaguely knows Occy's remarkable story will be keen to check it out, I imagine. It has been a great experience helping put it together and Occ was in typically hilarious form throughout - during our fact-finding missions to Hawaii, Fiji, road trips down to Angourie, visits to his old stomping grounds in Cronulla and Kurnell, or simply talking story on the top of D-bah hill. I hope readers will get an even deeper appreciation of his unique character and his astounding achievement in pulling his life together and coming back to win the world surfing title in 1999, 16 years after he joined the pro tour, and after almost a decade off tour, overweight, battling depression and substance abuse. As I write in the book's introduction, Mark's story is a powerful reminder of the power of pursuing one's bliss, the therapeutic properties of a good lie down, and the importance of never, ever giving up.
