Surfing Australia's Hall of Fame Awards were handed out at Twins Towns, Coolangatta, on February 26, and "High Surf" picked up the Culture Award. Former Bronzed Aussie and Duke and Smirnoff winner Mark Warren was inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame, Jon Frank won best surf photo of the year (accepting his award with a hilarious poem), and 'Bra Boys won best surf movie. Predictably, world champs Steph Gilmore and Mick Fanning won female and male surfers of the year, while Le-Ba won the Simon Anderson Boardriders Club Award and Rusty Miller (who also features in High Surf) received the Lifestyle Award (Rusty's acceptance speech was in the form of a charming ukelele number). It was a great night and a stirring celebration of the current renaissance in surf culture and growing historical awareness of surfing's roots. High Surf author Tim Baker dedicated his award to the memory of his friend Denis Callinan (founder of Surfer's Against Nature's Destruction). Tim is now the only two-time winner of Surfing Australia's "Culture Award," which he also picked up in 1997, along with Rabbit Bartholomew, as co-authors of "Bustin' Down The Door".
