My new book, "High Surf," goes on sale this Wednesday, September 26, at all good book stores, through Harper Collins publishers. "High Surf" features interviews with 25 of the most inspiring surfers I have had the good fortune to come across in my 20-odd years of surf writing, as well as some favourite anecdotes and quotes gathered in that time. The common theme is the life lessons to be gained from immersing yourself in the ocean and abiding by the natural laws inherent in surfing. Interview subjects range from old legends like Doc Paskowitz, Buffalo Keaulana, Phyllis O'Donnell and Bob McTavish, to modern surf stars like Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning and Dave Rastovich, to high achievers in other fields who happen to surf, like violinist Richard Tognetti, novelist Tim Winton, ethicist Peter Singer and chef Steven Snow. The common theme in all these surfers lives is how the lessons learnt in the ocean through surfing have shaped and informed their lives on land. As Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz, aged 86, puts it: "I keep surfing because surfing keeps me."
