When I was a teenager, newly obsessed with surfing, yet stuck in the landlocked eastern suburbs of Melbourne, I came across this book and it blew my young, impressionable mind. I vowed then and there that the moment I finished school and got my driver's licence, I would embark on the great round Australia surfing road trip, just like the two friends in the book. Somehow it never happened back then. But now it is. I am billing it as my pre-emptive strike on my mid-life crisis. My dear wife and children have embraced the concept whole-heartedly, clearly terrified of the idea of me in crisis. And so we are off, any day now, to traverse the highways and bi-ways of this great ilsland nation of ours. We are currently setting up a blog page for this site, where you can follow our journey. I'll also be writing for Coastalwatch and Surfing World, and at the end of it all there's a book, Surfari Highway, published by Random House, just in time for Christmas. I'm going to be busy. But I'll have a nice office, ensconcing myself in as many idyllic coastal campsites as I can find. So, wish us well, and I hope you'll follow our journey and find it amusing.
