Mick's trip to Sydney to promote our new book, Surf For Your Life, saw massive crowds at Manly Corso last Sunday. Timed to coincide with the Manly Surfing Festival, Mick's signing at the localRipCurl store drew hundreds of fans and a queue stretching for hundreds of metres. He signed nearly 200 books in an hour and a half and the thing had to be shut down in the end because Mick had to bail. Mick has a bit of time at home before heading to Hawaii for the Pipe Masters. Interestingly, his rival for the world title and good mate Joel Parkinson has flown over for the entire Triple Crown in Hawaii, as defending Triple Crown champion, while Mick is spending some well-earnt time at home to re-charge and focus purely on Pipe. Whatever happens, it should be a great end to the season. With Joel's own book due out in early 2010, the boyhood friends are going to be battling out on the best seller list as well as the ASP ratings. Despite all the hype and attention, the pair remain great mates but will be giving each other a bit of space while the world title is decided. You've got to feel for Joel, who won three of the first five events this year and looked to have his maiden title wrapped up. Mick's roll through California and Europe, winning three of the past four events, neatly coincided with us finishing work on our book, so I am taking credit for the close title finish. We wrapped up work on the book at J-Bay, where Mick copped an uncharacteristic 17th. From that point on, without a pesky journalist shadowing his every move, Mick went to California and came second at Huntington, first at Trestles, first in France, and first in Portugal. I'm thinking maybe I should stay the hell away from Hawaii for Pipe.
