SURF BOOKS ARE SO HOT RIGHT NOW

Bra Boys and Occy duke it out on the best seller list

It's always seemed to me a fairly tenuous proposition to make a living writing surfing books. But, happily, like that little point wave that keeps running and growing, the market for surfing books appears to be opening up and expanding as it runs down the point. A recent issue of the Sydney Morning's Herald had Sean Doherty's excellent Bra Boys biography, My Brothers Keeper, as the number one selling sports book in the country, and Occy at number three. Not a bad effort considering Occy has been out for almost a year, and between us we have edged out such sporting luminaries as Wayne Bennett, Adam Gilchrist and the newly crowned premiers, the Geelong Football Club. I suspect it is because surfers lead pretty action-packed, authentic lives and are prepared to tell their stories with a little less varnish and cliche than the typical sports book, possibly. Whatever the explanation, I am extremely grateful for the development. I also like the idea that we are encouraging folks to read who might not necessarily be big readers ordinarily, particular young blokes. Reading books has definitely enriched my life beyond measure and I'm keen to fly the flag for the humble book in the face of the short attention span, ADD culture of our times. So, once more, cheers to all who've beenĀ  purchasing surf books. Sean's also working on a Parko book along with some of the best surf photographers in the business, Jon Frank and Shorty, which is due for release in early 2010 and should be amazing.
