Well, Mick seems to be holding up his side of the deal by going and winning back-to-back events just prior to the release of the book we have been working on for the past 12 months. So, I may as well come clean. "Surf For Your Life," tells Mick's whole remarkable story from growing up in the western suburbs of Sydney to winning surfing's world title and beyond. After the success of the Occy book, I was asked by my publishers if there was another surfer I wanted to do a book with and I didn't need to think too long or hard about it. Mick's story has it all - overcoming adversity, personal loss, injury, a broken home. I have known the guy since he was 16 and have always been impressed by the way he has dealt with life's ups and downs. Not so much a straight bio, "Surf For Your Life," is Mick's complete guide to the world of surfing - training, competing, surfboards, travel, as well as the weird and ridiculous stuff that happens to young surfers as they circle the planet. When we first sat down and talked about doing the book I suggested he try and write it as if he was writing a letter to himself at the age of 16, knowing what he knows now, answering all the questions and providing all the guidance he wished he'd had then. He took to the task with gusto. Most sporting books are written by the subject simply talking into a recorder to the writer. Mick actually sat down and wrote large chunks of the book himself, spoke long and thoughtfully for the rest of it, and read and edited the whole thing with his characteristic attention to detail and sharp judgement. It was a great experience and we're stoked with the result. We hope you will be too. Meanwhile, Mick is giving the book the best possible pre-publicity by doing what he does best - winning surfing contests and breathing new life into the world title race with his childhood chum Joel Parko.
